Porter: Funny to watch him to do his homework tonight. Noah would run by every so often with a sword or helmet or something on yelling and jumping around and playing like he always does. I think because Porter had to sit at the table and was not playing this was more amusing to him than it usually is. He was laughing and laughing every time Noah walked by and at one point even said, "It's so funny just to watch him sometimes!" Yes, son, it is. That's how I feel all the time as a Mom - I love to just sit back and watch my kids play and soak it up. Sometimes they are their funniest and sweetest when they think no one is watching. And sometimes when things are getting a little too wild for me I just step out of the moment and can see the humor in the situation and see how little and harmless the kids (even in their mighty unruliness) actually are. I think a lot of mother's take everything so personal. Every time their kids are naughty or difficult it becomes all about them, the mother, and it SHOULD be about them, the children. Right?
The other thing that kept cracking me up while he was doing his homework is that if I ever left the room for a second I would return to Porter NOT doing his homework, but running laps around the house.
"Porter!"
"What?"
"Come finish your homework!"
"Oh! Right."
We had this conversation about three times.
Logan: I know I always talk about how kind-hearted Logan is. He still is. I think because he is so sweet in his nature, it sort of surprises me and dare I say, amuses me a little, when he says something less-than-sweet. The other night he DID NOT want to eat his spinach. He went so far as to mutter that it "tastes like a fart." Yep, he said the F-word and I had to stifle a snicker. What is wrong with me? We use the word "toot," so I'm not sure where he even heard it.
He also did not want to go to school anymore after about the third day. He was scowling and grumpy about it all morning. As I was walking him and Porter into school he was grumbling the whole way and even went so far as to kick the gate walking into school while muttering, "stupid school." Now, I know this kind of behavior doesn't seem like something I should document, but I am actually relieved that he can express himself without having some sort of fit and that he feels comfortable sharing his unpleasant feelings. Even at a such a young age I worry that sometimes he's a bit of a people-pleaser, so I actually feel a huge sigh of relief in moments like this.
He has also taken to affectionately referring to Jessie as "shorty." I think it's so darn cute but she doesn't like it one little bit. She's always trying to convince everyone, including me, that Logan is actually her little brother. When it is her turn to set the table she will give Logan the baby eating utensils.
Jessie: She was pretending she was an old lady today who was... "30." Really?! Thanks a lot! Actually, she was 30 and Logan was 34, so Jared's not off the hook, either. Jessie has some sort of strange fascination with old people. Whenever she sees an elderly person at a store something she gets so excited and says something like, "Look! A REAL little old lady!" She's better about not pointing anymore, but her cute little voice is so high-pitched and loud that I just hope those little old people can't hear worth a darn.
She got a Calico Critters dollhouse for Christmas the year before last and it has been one of the most played with toys we own. A couple of weeks ago her dollhouse was always a terrible mess and it seemed like our house was always messy as well. One day when I was trying to clean up a bit she said,
"Mom, I wish our house was as messy as my dollhouse!"
"Why? It's starting to feel like it's just as messy, but I don't like it."
"Oh I love it! I love to see all of our things all around me. I like to look at them and have them close to me!"
Well, that explains a whole awful lot.
A few days ago I finally got around to sitting down with her and organizing that dollhouse. I put away most of the tiny accessories because she is only three and there are just too many. We got the house all arranged just like she wanted and she has been playing with it every chance she gets. And the funny thing is she is really keeping it all clean! In fact, before she'll even let me play with her she gets everything all tidy and "organized," and then we can play. Not sure what brought on this change of heart, but I like it! I love when I find little things like this around the house (even if it's not in her perfectly tidy dollhouse).
When she really gets mad (usually at Logan) she resorts to name-calling. Yesterday's whopper was "wet wipe." That is a pretty foul thing to be called if you think about it. I've also heard her call a brother toot, ballerina, underwear, germ, and cockroach. We don't endorse name-calling in this house. As soon as I can speak without letting out a snicker I correct the name-calling... but I'm not the only one in this house who finds it amusing and is at least impressed with the creativity.
Noah: Tries so hard to say so many words! His favorite book currently is "Goodnight Moon" and he practically reads it to me in his own language, which I can understand but can't speak. He loves to find the little mouse in all the pictures.
The other day he was carrying around the Evil Dr. Pork Chop toy, cradled in his arms like a baby and covered up with a little blanket. He kept telling it ssshhh and rocking it. This was so sweet and one of the few times I've ever seen him play so tenderly. He is always making "guys" as he calls them fight or blowing stuff up. Then he accidentally dropped Evil Dr. Pork Chop, gasped, kissed it on the head, and proceeded to cover it up with a blanket and rock it. ??? I was getting dinner ready but just had to stop and watch this. He didn't know I was watching, which is why I think it lasted so long.
This is why they can't wait to get home from school, I guess.
